In the right hands, a modern adaptation of Y: The Last Man will have plenty to say about sexuality and gender politics in a world run by women. To circumvent transphobic accusations faced by the comic, the network has hired transgender author Charlie Jane Anders to write for the show, and FX is reportedly casting a transgender actor to play a new character called Sam as well.

Unfortunately, the original story of Yorick Brown, the last surviving male on planet earth, has aged somewhat since the early 2000s, at least in terms of gender politics, and there have been some concerns that the show would need to update these to avoid controversy.

The Walking Dead: World BeyondĮfforts to adapt the apocalyptic comic book series Y: The Last Man are finally making some headway at FX. Given that the book was first released in 1978, CBS's adaptation would need to modernise Dayna's portrayal somewhat, but still, there's a real opportunity here to create a Stephen King-themed world that more accurately reflects our own in terms of queer representation. Set against an apocalyptic backdrop, King's biblical tale of good versus evil features a huge cast of unforgettable characters, including Dayna Jurgens, a young bisexual woman who fights to save the earth. Stephen King adaptations are often a mixed bag when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation - think IT: Chapter Two - but a new adaptation of The Stand could change all that by updating one of its best characters in 2020. While many audiences loved Love, Simon, the film lacked diversity in some key areas, so let's hope that the show rectifies this while still normalising queer teen love stories in a mainstream fashion. Original star Nick Robinson will also return as the show's narrator.
Set in the same world as the film, Love, Simon's small screen version will follow a new student called Victor (Michael Cimino) who reaches out to Simon for help when trying to figure out his own sexuality.

Katy KeeneĪfter High School Musical: The Musical: The Series broke new ground with a queer relationship at the end of 2019, Disney+ will continue its progressive streak in 2020 with a Love, Simon TV spin-off.
Think Stranger Things but with a darker edge and more relatable themes of teen angst and hardship. IT's Sophia Lillis stars as a teenager navigating school and her sexuality alongside some newfound superpowers too. Given that The End of the F**king Worldwon't be returning any time soon, Netflix is filling the void with another graphic novel adaptation in 2020, which is once again based on a Charles Forsman graphic novel helmed by showrunner Jonathan Entwistle.
Jake Picking has been confirmed to play Rock Hudson, the Hollywood icon who lived in the closet during his heyday, so expect to see his story play out to some degree too. From Glee and American Horror Story to Pose and Scream Queens, Ryan Murphy has done the utmost to make Hollywood as gay as possible, so it's rather fitting that his next big project is actually titled Hollywood.ĭetails on Murphy's latest Netflix venture are scarce right now, but what we do know is that Darren Criss ( The Assassination of Gianni Versace) will star in the '40s-set period piece which has been described as "a love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown".
